In a world dominated by male artistes, the women percussionists of India have struggled to earn their spotlight in spite of immense talent and stage presence. Established in 2016, Women of Rhythm is the World’s first concert series for female percussionists that honours their spirit and struggle.
The concept marks the beginning of a revolution in the percussion industry in India which has been a male dominated industry since its inception.
Season 1 & 2 of Women of Rhythm featured 13 of India’s leading female percussionists. From Ananya Patil on Drums, to Vdu. Sukanya Ramagopal on ghatam, to duo Mahima Upadhyay & Savani Talwalkar on the Pakhawaj and Tabla and many many more.
Women of Rhythm III on the 30th November at St. Andrews Auditorium in Bandra promises another season of following phenomenal artists and amazing music. Thirteen young and talented percussionists will play at the third Edition of Women of Rhythm in Mumbai this month end. Curated by Mumbai based artiste and event management company Event Shevent, this edition proves to be powerful and extremely unique.
From a 16-year-old drummer to the first Ghatam player in the world and from a multi percussionist to a duet of Traditional Chenda players, this season promises to be as unique as it gets. Each act has been uniquely curated for the show.
Sukkanya Ramgopal, the first Woman to play the Ghatam (Earthen Pot) Music and Sumana Chandrashekhar will be headlining the 3rd edition of Women of Rhythm. Neesha Mokal will play multi percussions at Women of Rhythm jamming with Tabla Artiste Mukta Raste who herself is a multi talented musician and who was instrumental in teaching the Tabla to Sonam Kapoor for the Film Padman. For the first time ever, A Woman Mridangam artiste and four women Chenda players will collaborate at Women of Rhythm in Mumbai. Shrishty Patidar will be joining 16 year old Metal Drummer Ananya Patil and stellar drumming artiste Siddhi Shah in an interesting Trio which will display the Beats of World Drumming.
The organizers of Women of Rhythm aim at organizing four concerts as a part of the concert series. Vibhor Hasija, Director of Yours Eventfully, one of the associated partner of Women of Rhythm maintains that “the disparity in the number of male and female musicians in the Hindi Film Music Business is very concerning. As a musician himself he is an audience to this disparity almost every day. Women of Rhythm is the first step to bridge that gap and make women musicians visible to producers, music directors, event manager and promoters of music.
The tickets for Women of Rhythm are available on BookMyShow.com and Insider.in
To entice the students of drumming to by tickets and come for the show, the organizers have kept the ticket price for students only at Rs. 99/-. They will however have to display their ID cards to enter the venue.
